Why do bees make honey? It’s the food that they eat during the cold months of winter and those beeswax-capped chambers in the honeycomb can hold the honey indefinitely … until the bees themselves eat it or a beekeeper like Genji Leclair at Great Lakes Bee Co. decides to begin harvest.

The Great Lakes Bee Co. began in 1974 when Larry Hassleman established bee yards in Newaygo County. The company grew steadily and when Genji Leclair moved to the area from Chicago and ran across the company’s distinctive yellow-and-red label, she did as the jar said, and “called Larry.” A noted honey fanatic, Genji came on board and helped Larry grow the company.
