Other than grass, what do dairy cattle eat?

Cows eat grass, but grass doesn't grow in fields across the United States throughout the year. Dairy farmers have to manage the diet of their cattle by balancing access to grass with silage, hay and alfalfa, so cattle are typically fed a total mixed ration. Farmers feed their cattle based upon their local resources and those resources evolve as seasons change throughout the year.
