The Grape and Wine Institute educates and elevates Missouri's winemakers
Dr. Stephan Sommer is an assistant extension professor and state extension specialist for enology at the University of Missouri's Grape and Wine Institute. In this role, he works with the region's grape growers and winemakers to refine their approach through classes and seminars. The Grape and Wine Institute also accepts samples from vineyards from across the state for analysis and feedback, sending recommendations for improvement. The Institute also has a wine quality program and reaches out to wineries across the state of Missouri to offer assistance in improving quality of their wines.
The Grape and Wine Institute (GWI) is a collaborative partnership between the Missouri wine and grape industry and the University of Missouri. The Missouri Wine and Grape Board provides guidance and oversight to ensure that GWI fulfills its responsibilities. GWI provides information and advice on all issues related to viticulture and enology. Activities and programs are driven by industry needs and are science-based. GWI is committed to the sustainability of Missouri's grape and wine industry. Programs are offered without bias to all segments and levels of the industry.
