Meet the Makers: Austin
On Saturday, Jan. 26, 2020, over 330 individuals ventured to The Hall at Jester King Brewery for Meet the Makers: Austin. The first hour consisted of live interviews and cooking demonstrations with James Brown of Barton Springs Mill, Mark Buley from Sour Duck Market, David Norman of Easy Tiger and Jamie Biel of Treaty Oak Distilling. The educational segment was mixed with clips from TasteMAKERS’ Barton Springs Mill episode, emphasizing how each of the businesses on the stage had been positively impacted by the founding of Barton Springs Mill in 2016.
The live show kicked-off with Norman showing how to knead bread. Following Norman, Brown took the stage, and discussed with Cat the history behind his love for milling, why he decided to open a grain hub and why he mills the specific grains and wheat that he does. Next up was Buley, who made a “corn-nut-like” snack made out of whole wheat berries. Biel closed the show, teaching the audience how to make the perfect Old Fashioned and raising a glass to the Makers Movement.
After the live portion, guests had the opportunity to sample and shop from 16 different local makers (scroll below slideshow) in a farmers-market-like fashion. Offerings varied from beer, kombucha and coffee to ice cream, olive oil, bread and spreads. A live guitarist set the mood, and Shutterbooth photos made for a fun take-home to remember the day.
