On Long Island, the Peconic Land Trust is working to preserve the area's farming heritage through Farms For the Future
Farmland is expensive and in a place like Long Island, which a gorgeous length of land jutting out into the sea just east of New York City, the cost of living is sky-high, farmland can be prohibitively expensive.
Much like other land trust organizations, the Peconic Land Trust works to preserve Long Island’s natural areas through conservation easements and preserves. Unlike other land trusts, however, Peconic Land Trust also has an initiative that is designed to protect and expand access to farmland on Long Island.
Farms for the Future has a number of active projects, including Shellfisher Preserve in Southold, a revitalized shellfish operation, and Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, which is one of the country’s first CSAs. Peconic Land Trust leases land to Peconic Escargot, which gave Taylor and Kate the space they needed to build their greenhouse.
